Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (IATA: PHX, ICAO: KPHX, FAA LID: PHX) is a civil-military public international airport located 3 miles (4.8 km) east of downtown Phoenix, in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. It is currently the largest and busiest airport in Arizona, and one of the largest and busiest commercial airports in the United States.
The airport was conceived and founded by J. Parker Van Zandt, the owner of Scenic Airways, in 1928. Van Zandt purchased 278 acres of farmland for Scenic's winter operations and immediately began construction on an airplane hangar and runway. This was the fourth airport built in Phoenix. The airport's evocative name, Sky Harbor, may have been inspired by a desire by Scenic to name all its airports Sky Harbor, or by the idea of a 'harbor' for aircraft.
Scenic Airways sold the airport to Acme Investment Company in 1929, following the infamous Wall Street Crash, and Acme owned the airport until 1935. During this time, the airport was served by Maddux Air Lines, which operated the airport's first scheduled passenger service, and Standard Air Lines, which operated a route between Los Angeles and El Paso, stopping at Phoenix, Tucson, and Douglas, Arizona.
In 1935, the City of Phoenix purchased the airport from Acme for $100,000. The airport was in an isolated location, and residents nicknamed it "The Farm." Following the city's purchase, the airport began to grow, becoming a major southern hub for the United States. American Airlines, which had been using Sky Harbor since 1930, threatened to cut off passenger and air-mail service if the city did not buy the airport. Over the next few decades, the airport continued to expand, with new terminals and routes being added, and by 1948, it was declared the busiest airport in the United States.
Today, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport handles over 1,200 flights and 22 million passengers a day, with Southwest Airlines having a slightly larger market share than American Airlines. The airport has two terminals, Terminal 3 and Terminal 4, with a total of 117 active aircraft gates, and it continues to be one of the fastest-growing airports in the United States.
