Phnom Penh International Airport, formerly Pochentong International Airport, is Cambodia's busiest international airport. During the Japanese occupation of Cambodia, the Japanese built up to fifteen airports across the country, including on the site of the current Phnom Penh airport. It has been reported that these airports were built using slave labour.
After Cambodia gained independence from France in 1953, King Norodom Sihanouk ordered new airstrips or improvements to existing sites. The King recognised that air travel could play a crucial role in connecting the country, given the poor road infrastructure at the time.
During the Cambodian War, the airport was extensively used for airlifts of military and civilian supplies. In 1973, for instance, C-130s of the 374th Tactical Air Lift brought 3,000 tons of rice via airlift. By April 1975, with the Khmer Rouge controlling the last land and water routes, the airport became the sole path for supplies for Phnom Penh.
During this time, the Khmer Rouge continued to bombard Phnom Penh and Pochentong Airport. Despite the shelling, the United States mobilised an airlift of food, fuel, and ammunition into Phnom Penh. However, due to limitations on US support, a private company, BirdAir, controlled the airlift.
