Boston Logan International Airport, also known as General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport, is named after Maj. Gen. Edward Lawrence Logan, a 20th-century soldier, lawyer, judge, politician, and military officer. Born in South Boston, Massachusetts, in 1875, Logan attended Harvard College, graduating in 1897. He then enlisted in the 9th Infantry of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, where he rose through the ranks and saw combat in the Spanish-American War.
Upon returning to Boston, Logan pursued a successful legal career, building a law practice in the city. He also entered politics, winning a seat on the Boston Common Council in 1899 and later serving in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and as a state senator. In 1911, he was promoted to major in the military, and the following year, he became commander of the 9th Regiment. During World War I, Logan's unit was mobilized and saw combat in France. In 1921, he was promoted to brigadier general and took command of the 26th Division's 1st Brigade. Two years later, he was named division commander as a major general, becoming responsible for reorganizing and training the division as a Massachusetts unit.
Throughout his life, Logan advocated intensely for veteran benefits and achieved prominence as the state commander of the American Legion and president of the National Guard Association of the United States. He retired from the military in 1938 and passed away in Boston the following year. In recognition of his decades of service, he received a state promotion to lieutenant general. In 1943, Boston Airport was renamed in his honour, and a statue of Logan was unveiled at the entrance in 1956.
