Covering an area of 7,000 acres, it is the 6th busiest airport in the US by cargo traffic and the 12th largest globally.
The history of the airport dates back to World War II. On February 11, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration approved funds for the site development of the Greater Cincinnati Airport. At the time, air traffic centred on the Lunken Airport, which was prone to fog and had experienced a flood that submerged its runways and terminal building in 1937.
On October 27, 1946, a small wooden terminal building opened, and the airport prepared for commercial service. The first commercial flight, an American Airlines DC-3 from Cleveland, landed on January 10, 1947, at 9:53 am, followed shortly after by a Delta Air Lines flight. By April 1957, the airport was facilitating 97 weekday departures from various airlines.
In the 1950s, Cincinnati city leaders pushed for the expansion of a site in Blue Ash to compete with the Greater Cincinnati Airport and replace Lunken as the city's primary airport. The city purchased Hugh Watson Field in 1955, turning it into the Blue Ash Airport. However, these plans faced community opposition, political infighting, and Cincinnati's decision not to participate in the federal airfield program.
On December 16, 1960, the airport welcomed its first scheduled jet flight, a Delta Air Lines Convair 880 from Miami. To accommodate the jet age, the airport expanded its facilities, including extending the north-south runway from 3,100 to 8,600 feet and constructing a new east-west runway in 1971.
