Orlando Sanford International Airport (IATA: SFB, ICAO: KSFB, FAA LID: SFB) is a commercial, public airport in Sanford, Florida, near Orlando. It is Orlando's secondary airport and is smaller than the primary airport, Orlando International Airport (MCO/KMCO).
The airport was originally built as Naval Air Station Sanford, a Master Jet Base for carrier-based attack and reconnaissance aircraft. It was commissioned on November 3, 1942, and was used by the United States Navy until its closure in 1969. During its time as a naval base, the base focused on advanced land-based patrol plane training. In 1969, the City of Sanford assumed control of the facility, renaming it Sanford Airport and establishing the Sanford Airport Authority. For the next 25 years, the airport was a general aviation facility and hosted civilian and military air shows.
In the 1970s, the former OLF (presumably referring to the former Naval Air Station Sanford) became a transshipment point for drug-smuggling aircraft. Following a major drug interdiction operation, Seminole County placed large speed bumps on the runways to prevent future illegal use. By the 1980s, the county began using the site as a landfill and dump, demolishing the remaining runways. During this time, the oldest Navy buildings were demolished, while those constructed in the 1950s and 1960s were renovated for civil use. New buildings and hangars were also added.
In the mid-1990s, a new passenger terminal capable of accommodating jet airliners was built. This led to many charter airlines, which had previously used Orlando International Airport, relocating their operations to Sanford due to reduced landing fees. During this period, the airport underwent several name changes, including Sanford Regional Airport, Central Florida Regional Airport, and Orlando Sanford Regional Airport, before becoming the Orlando Sanford International Airport.
Today, Orlando Sanford International Airport serves as an operating base for Allegiant Air. While the airport was initially dominated by European charter services due to its affiliation with Orlando, it has seen a shift to majority domestic passenger traffic since 2008 due to the presence of Allegiant Air.
