The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport
The airport is the primary commercial airport for the New Orleans metropolitan area and southeast Louisiana. Planning for the airport began in 1940, as the older Shushan Airport (New Orleans Lakefront Airport) was deemed too small. The airport was originally named Moisant Field after daredevil aviator John Moisant, who died in 1910 in an airplane crash on the agricultural land where the airport now stands. During World War II, the site became a government airbase, and commercial service began in May 1946. However, the airport was shut down in September 1947 due to flooding caused by the 1947 Fort Lauderdale Hurricane.
In November 2019, a new terminal building opened on the north side of the airport property, featuring two concourses and 35 gates. The former terminal, located on the south side, is no longer in regular commercial use.
