The airport's history
Donegal Airport is located in Carrickfinn, Kincasslagh, in the north-west of Ireland. The airport is approximately 15 minutes' drive from Dungloe and Gweedore, and 45 minutes from Letterkenny. It is also just 55 minutes flying time from Dublin.
The airport was first developed to provide easy access for business executives wishing to locate to the local industrial estate. Donegal Airport is owned and managed by a private limited company, 'Aerphort Idirnaisiúnta Dhún na nGall Teo'. It is widely recognised as a key element of the county's infrastructure, providing an important air access point to this peripheral region in Ireland.
The airport started passenger operations on Christmas Eve 1985, with flights to Glasgow International Airport and Manchester Airport operated by Malinair. In 1989, the runway was extended to 1,450m, with a further extension to 1,500m in 1992-93, along with the installation of runway safety areas and a new terminal building.
