Victoria International Airport, located 12 nautical miles (22 km or 14 miles) north-northwest of Victoria on the Saanich Peninsula, started life as Victoria (Patricia Bay) Airport in 1948. It was renamed Victoria International Airport in 1959. Victoria Regional Airport was built in 1976
Before 1976, the site had a long history of aviation activity. In 1948, the Department of Transport took over the airport, then called Victoria (Patricia Bay) Airport. The airport was well-located beside Patricia Bay, which proved an excellent spot for the prevalent flying boats of the time. Trans-Canada Airlines (later Air Canada) began regular service in 1943. In 1959, the airport was renamed Victoria International Airport.
In the 1960s, Trans-Texas Airways (TTa) operated 21-seat Douglas DC-3 aircraft, with up to five departures a day to Houston Hobby and San Antonio. By 1968, TTa was operating all flights into Victoria with 40-seat Convair 600 turboprops, offering non-stop service to Houston Hobby, Harlingen, and McAllen. TTa changed its name to Texas International, which began flying 15-seat Beechcraft 99 commuter turboprops non-stop to Houston Intercontinental Airport in 1970.
In the 1970s and early 1980s, Metro Airlines served Victoria Regional Airport with de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter commuter turboprops, offering up to seven non-stop flights a day to Houston Intercontinental. By 1979, Tejas Airlines, a commuter airline based in San Antonio, was also serving the airport.
