In 2018, the Auckland Transport Alignment Project was announced, with a $28 billion investment in Auckland's transport infrastructure over ten years, including fast-tracking light rail to Auckland International Airport.
The light rail route was planned to run from Wynyard Quarter to Auckland Airport, via the CBD, University of Auckland, Kingsland Railway Station, Wesley, Mount Roskill, Onehunga, and Mangere. At Mount Roskill, it would have connected to the planned Dominion Road light rail line, continuing to Queen Street in Central Auckland.
This project was initially supported by the Sixth Labour Government, which proposed an underground/surface route hybrid. However, in January 2024, the National-led coalition government cancelled the project, citing the high costs and long construction period.
