Dulles Access Highway
The Dulles Access Highway, also known as the Dulles Access Road, is a four-lane, 13.65-mile (21.97 km) highway that provides direct access to Dulles International Airport in Virginia, USA. The highway is exclusively used for entering and exiting the airport, and there are no general-access exits or entrances, except for emergency vehicles and buses. The highway opened in 1962 along with the airport and was later extended to Interstate 66 in 1985.
The Dulles Access Highway is toll-free for traffic heading to or from the airport. However, it is restricted to airport use only, and vehicles must be going to or coming from the airport on official airport business. The highway connects to the westbound and eastbound roadways of the Dulles Toll Road, which has four lanes in each direction. During rush hour periods, the left lane of the Toll Road is reserved for High Occupancy Vehicles (HOV), and single-occupancy vehicles travelling during rush hours on Interstate 66 inside the Capital Beltway are subject to tolls.
The Dulles Toll Road, officially named the Omer L. Hirst – Adelard L. Brault Expressway, is an eight-lane, 16.15-mile (25.99 km) toll road that runs outside the Dulles Access Road. It was built to address the congestion caused by commuters using the Access Road to "backtrack" to their exits. The toll road begins near West Falls Church and travels westward through Fairfax County, terminating at the entrance to the Dulles Greenway, a privately-owned toll road that is a continuation of Route 267.
The Dulles Access Highway and the Dulles Toll Road are both part of State Route 267 (SR 267), an expressway in Virginia. SR 267 also includes the Dulles Greenway, a 12.53-mile (20.17 km) toll road that runs northwest from the end of the Dulles Toll Road to the Leesburg Bypass. The combined roadway network provides a convenient and efficient transportation system for travellers and commuters in the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia region.
