Schilling Air Force Base was originally constructed as the Smoky Hill Army Airfield in response to the United States' entry into World War II following the Pearl Harbor Attack. The airfield was activated on September 1, 1942, and was assigned to the II Bomber Command, Second Air Force. The first aircraft to arrive were Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses, which arrived later that month.
On March 16, 1957, the base was renamed the Schilling Air Force Base in honour of Colonel David C. Schilling. During this time, the base hosted the 310th and 40th Bombardment Wings. In 1960, the Site Activation Task Force at Schilling constructed and turned over to the Strategic Air Command the first operational HGM-16 Atlas-F hardened silo missile squadron.
In 1964, rumours began to circulate that the base was being considered for shutdown. In November of that year, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara confirmed that Schilling AFB would indeed be closing, along with 94 other military installations. The shutdown began in 1965 and was completed in 1967.
