Earl Simmons, better known by his stage name DMX (an acronym for "Divine Master of the Unknown" and also a tribute to the Oberheim DMX drum machine he used in the 1980s), was born on December 18, 1970, in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in Yonkers, New York. He was the second of three children born to teenage parents, Arnetts Simmons and Joe Barker, who broke all contact with each other when he was an infant.
