History of Ostend-Bruges Airport
Ostend–Bruges International Airport, commonly known as Ostend Airport, is located about 16 miles (25 km) from central Bruges, Belgium. The airport covers about 350 hectares (860 acres) of land and has one 3,200-metre (10,500 ft) runway.
During the Second World War, the Luftwaffe moved the airfield of Ostend-Stene to a site in the territory of the municipality of Middelkerke, five kilometres southwest of Ostend. It played a major role in the air battle with Britain. In the first few decades after the war, Ostend Airport specialised in transporting passengers to and from England. However, following a decrease in "air-coach" passengers, the airport began to focus more on cargo transport.
In 1992, ownership of the airport was transferred from the Belgian State to the Flemish Region, and it was renamed "Ostend–Bruges International Airport". In the same year, a Douglas DC-3C LX-DKT of Legend Air was damaged beyond repair when it was blown into a Boeing 707 during a storm. On 18 April 2001, an Ilyushin Il-76 crashed during takeoff, and two years later, it was scrapped at the airport.
In 2003, Ryanair began operating a route between Ostend and London Stansted, which helped the airport gain its current name.
