Myrtle Beach International Airport's history
The history of Myrtle Beach International Airport can be traced back to before the town of Myrtle Beach existed. The area's first "airport" was a grass landing strip that opened in August 1928 to attract wealthy investors. On March 12, 1938, the town of Myrtle Beach was incorporated, and on October 16, 1939, the Myrtle Beach Town Council agreed to purchase land to build a "modern municipal airport". The airport was named "Harrelson Municipal Airport" in recognition of Mayor W.L. Harrelson's support.
In December 1941, just days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Myrtle Beach Town Council sold the airport to the U.S. War Department for $3,500, and it became the Myrtle Beach Bombing and Gunnery Training Range. In 1943, the facilities were used to house German prisoners of war, and the airfield served as a staging ground for B-25 bombers deploying to Europe.
From 1958 to 1976, funds were allocated to the Horry County Jetport in Crescent Beach, which later moved to the northeast part of the base to allow for joint civilian and military use. In 1977, the City of Myrtle Beach annexed the area of Myrtle Beach Airport. From the 1980s until 1993, both MYR and Myrtle Beach AFB shared the main runway, limiting civilian operations to 30 landings per day. This limitation sparked a movement to build a new airport.
In 1993, the Air Force base closed as a result of the 1991 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, and the runway was turned over to the Horry County Department of Airports. On April 1, 1996, Myrtle Beach Airport officially became an international airport with a new terminal and logo. The airport has since undergone various expansions and improvements, including the addition of new airlines and routes. In 2021, a 20-year plan was announced to double the number of gates and enhance the airport's international flight offerings.
