Maine Air Travel: Airports Connecting To Portland

Portland, Maine is served by Portland International Jetport (PWM), which is located just 5 miles from the city centre. The airport is accessible from Exit 46 of I-95 (the Maine Turnpike) and Exit 3 of I-295, with an additional entrance on outer Congress Street. It is the busiest airport in the state, handling over two million passengers in 2018. The airport offers flights to destinations including Orlando, Washington, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, Tampa, and Newark. Southwest Airlines and JetBlue are two of the low-cost carriers serving the airport.

Portland International Jetport

The airport has undergone several expansions and improvements over the years, including a $75 million project in 2010-2011 that brought changes such as improved check-in and security areas, reconfiguration of airport roads, and expansion of the parking garage.

Several airlines operate from Portland International Jetport, including Southwest Airlines, which offers flights to Baltimore/Washington, Nashville, Tampa, and other destinations. Air Canada previously offered a twice-daily service to Toronto from 2010 to 2013. In 2009, Starlink Aviation briefly offered service to Halifax and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

The airport has a designated plane-spotting area on Aviation Boulevard, allowing enthusiasts to observe arriving and departing flights. This area was established after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, which resulted in heightened security and the prohibition of plane-spotting from Jetport Plaza Road and Jetport Access Road.

Bangor International Airport

The airport's prosperity is due to its location on major air corridors between Europe and the East Coast of the United States. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the airport attracted 3,000 to 5,000 commercial flights annually, primarily charter jetliners flying between Europe and the West Coast of the United States, or the Caribbean and Mexico. Bangor was a popular refuelling stop, and as a U.S. port of entry, it allowed passengers to clear customs and immigration while their planes were serviced.

Presque Isle International Airport

The airport was formerly known as the Northern Maine Regional Airport and was previously a United States Air Force Base which closed in 1961. The base was then redeveloped, with a business park being built on one side and the other portion becoming the Northern Maine Regional Airport, which later became Presque Isle International Airport. The airport has the third longest active runway in Maine at 7,441 feet (2,268 metres).

Boston Logan International Airport

Boston Logan offers direct flights to over 100 domestic and international destinations, serviced by more than 40 airlines. Portsmouth International Airport

The airport covers a vast area of 3,000 acres, sitting at an elevation of 100 feet above mean sea level. It features a long runway, ideal for corporate jet operators heading to various regions, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Portsmouth International Airport accommodates diverse airline services, from regional and commuter flights to international charters and scheduled operators.

Previously known as Pease International Airport, it is a joint civil and military airport. The airport shares its runway with the Pease Air National Guard Base, home to the 157th Air Refueling Wing of the New Hampshire Air National Guard. The airport is owned by the Pease Development Authority, which has invested in significant improvements, including a runway reconstruction project and a passenger terminal expansion.
