In 1995, the airport was renamed Trenton–Mercer Airport to associate it with the city of Trenton, the capital of New Jersey and the county seat of Mercer County. On March 11, 1998, an automated surface observing system (ASOS) was implemented at the airport, replacing human weather observers. Over the years, Trenton–Mercer Airport has undergone several improvements, including the renovation of its terminal in 2013 and the rehabilitation of three taxiways in 2014. The airport has also consistently ranked among the fastest-growing airports in the United States.
