Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is a commercial and military-use airport in Savannah, Georgia, United States. The airport's previous names include Savannah International Airport, Travis Field, and Chatham Field.
The airport's history can be traced back to the 1940s when, in response to the increased military presence, the City of Savannah decided to construct a second municipal airport. The city acquired a 600-acre tract near Cherokee Hill, one of the highest elevations in the county, and construction of a new airfield began under a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project. Three 3,600-foot runways were constructed, running north-south, east-west, and northeast-southwest.
However, before the new airfield was completed, the U.S. Army Air Corps took over the facility and renamed it "Chatham Field." During World War II, Chatham Field served as a bomber and crew training base for B-24 bombers and fighter aircraft. After the war, in 1948, the airfield was turned over to the Georgia Air National Guard, and the airport was renamed "Travis Field" in honour of Savannah native Brigadier General Robert F. The airport moved from Hunter Field to Travis Field in 1950, and the first commercial flight from Travis Field was operated by Delta Flight 371 with eight passengers to Atlanta.
In 1994, a new 275,000 sq. ft. terminal building was opened, featuring 10 gates (expandable to 19). The project, which cost $43 million, also included new roads, a new aircraft taxiway, storm water ponds, landscaping, and a new interchange at I-95 for easy airport access. Following this, the airport became known as Savannah International Airport.
In 2007, a Terminal Expansion project added five new gates and 10,000 sq. ft. of concession space to the existing concourse. The expansion was designed to reflect the architectural style of the region and incorporated retail and food services. In addition, a new $35 million parking garage was opened in the same year.
In recognition of the growing number of customers travelling to South Carolina, the airport's name was changed once more to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. The airport has consistently been ranked highly by travellers, being named the #1 Best Domestic Airport in Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards in 2022 and by Condé Nast Traveler magazine for three consecutive years.
