Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) expansion plans
Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is undergoing a major expansion to improve efficiency and provide passengers with more amenities and options. The airport is located in the South Fort Myers area of unincorporated Lee County, Florida, and is one of the top 50 U.S. airports, serving over 11 million passengers in 2024.
The expansion plans include the construction of a new concourse, Concourse E, with 14 initial gates and the infrastructure to support 19 gates in the future. This new concourse will also include a new Transportation Security Checkpoint, expanded retail and food and beverage concessions, and airside improvements. The existing main terminal will also be expanded on all three levels, with a new ticketing lobby and Bag Claim area, and a new Baggage Handling System. In total, more than 164,000 square feet of space will be remodelled and 117,000 square feet of new walkways and concession space will be added. The expansion project is expected to be completed and operational in 2025, with Phase 1 of the project costing an estimated $331 million.
The project is being funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Passenger Facility Charges (PFCs), airport revenue bonds, and construction grants from the Lee County Port Authority (LCPA). FDOT provided $77.9 million of funding, while LCPA granted $224.9 million. The expansion is expected to help the airport accommodate the increased passenger traffic that has reached pre-Covid levels of more than ten million passengers per year.
However, the project has encountered significant delays, with the original completion date set for October 2024. As of February 2024, the project was more than four years behind schedule and hundreds of millions of dollars over budget. The delays have been attributed to design-related issues and challenges with the construction manager and firm. Despite these setbacks, the Lee County Port Authority is committed to recovering as much time as possible and getting the project back on schedule.
