Restarting Airport Extreme: A Hard Reset Guide

If you're experiencing issues with your Airport Extreme, you may need to perform a hard restart. However, there are also other methods to restart your Airport Extreme, such as using the Airport Utility app on your iPhone or iPad, or by performing a factory reset.

Restarting an Airport Extreme Base Station

There are a few different ways to restart an Airport Extreme Base Station. One way is to simply unplug the power cord from the back of the Airport Extreme, wait a few seconds, and then plug it back in. This is a quick and easy way to restart the device.

If you want to restart the Airport Extreme from your Mac, you can do so by opening the AirPort Utility. This can be found in the Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility. Once you have opened the AirPort Utility, click on the Base Station menu at the top of the computer screen. From here, you will be able to restart the device.

If you have the AirPort Utility installed on your iPhone or iPad, you can also restart the Airport Extreme from there. To do this, open the AirPort Utility app, select your Airport Extreme icon, click Edit, then Advanced, and finally, Restart Base Station. You may be prompted to enter your Base Station password.

Additionally, you can perform a factory-default reset on the Airport Extreme. To do this, first disconnect the base station from power. Then, while holding down the reset button, reconnect the base station to power and continue to hold the reset button for about 6 seconds, until the status light on the base station flashes amber rapidly. This will restore the device to its factory default settings.

Using the AirPort Utility App

If you want to hard restart your AirPort Extreme, you can do so using the AirPort Utility App.

First, open the AirPort Utility App. This can be found in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder. If you're using a Mac, you can find it by going to Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility. Once you've opened the app, click on the icon for the Base Station.

Next, go to the AirPort Utility menu for the Base Station. From here, you can select the Restart command. You may be asked to enter your Base Station password.

If you're using an iPhone or iPad, you can also restart your AirPort Extreme from your device. Open the AirPort Utility App and select your AirPort Extreme icon. Then, go to Edit > Advanced > Restart Base Station.

Alternatively, you can perform a factory-default reset. To do this, disconnect the base station from power. While holding down the reset button, reconnect the base station to power and continue to hold the reset button for about six seconds, until the status light on the base station flashes amber rapidly.

Soft reset

To soft reset your AirPort Extreme, you need to reset your AirPort base station. This will restore it to a state that allows you to regain control of it when you've lost the base station password or the base station isn't responding as expected. A soft reset will reset the base station password and disable security (Access Control and RADIUS settings) for 5 minutes so that you can join the network to make changes. If you make no changes within 5 minutes, the base station will revert to its former settings.

While holding down the reset button, connect the base station to power and continue to hold the reset button for about 6 seconds, until the status light on the base station flashes amber rapidly. Wait about a minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart. You can then launch AirPort Utility to re-configure the AirPort Extreme.

If you have AirPort Utility installed on your iPhone or iPad, you can also do this from there. Go to the AirPort Utility App, select your AirPort Extreme icon, then Edit, Advanced, and Restart Base Station. You may have to enter your Base Station password.

Factory-default reset

To factory-default reset your AirPort Extreme, you'll need to disconnect the base station from its power source. While holding down the reset button, reconnect the base station to the power and continue to hold the reset button for about 6 seconds, until the status light on the base station flashes amber rapidly. This will restore your AirPort Extreme to its factory settings.

You can also perform a soft reset, which resets the base station password and disables security for 5 minutes, allowing you to join the network and make changes. If no changes are made within 5 minutes, the base station will revert to its previous settings.
