The airport was built by Dutch settlers during the colonial period in Andir village and was originally named Andir Airfield. The airfield is conjoined with the Husein Sastranegara air force base of the Indonesian Air Force.

By 2010, the airport was handling 30 flights per day. In the same year, the Bandung Air Show was held at the airport for the first time, bringing international aviation audiences.
