History of Quincy Regional Airport
Quincy Regional Airport, also known as Quincy Regional-Baldwin Field Airport, is a non-towered airport in the Midwestern town of Quincy, Illinois, on the shores of the Mississippi River. The airport code UIN is used to refer to Quincy Regional-Baldwin Field Airport for ticketing purposes.
In 1950, Trans World Airlines (TWA) operated two daily Douglas DC-3 services with westbound and eastbound routings that included Quincy. Ozark Air Lines served the airport in 1951 with four DC-3 flights a day, operating a twice-daily round trip routing of St. Louis-Quincy-Keokuk, IA-Burlington, IA-Moline, IL. In 1953, Braniff International Airways operated two daily DC-3 services with a southbound flight routing of Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN-Rochester, MN-Austin, MN-Mason City, IA-Waterloo, IA-Des Moines-Ottumwa, IA-Quincy-St. Louis and a northbound flight with the same stops. TWA was no longer serving Quincy by the mid-1950s, with Braniff ceasing its service in 1959, while Ozark continued to serve the airport.
By 1967, Ozark was operating ten departures every weekday from Quincy with non-stop service to several destinations, including St. Louis, Burlington, Columbia, MO, and Springfield, IL. By 1975, Air Illinois was also serving Quincy, operating de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter turboprops on nonstop flights from St. Louis. In 1989, Trans World Express, operated by Air Midwest, served Quincy with Swearingen Metroliner commuter propjets. In the early to mid-1990s, Trans States Airlines served Quincy with British Aerospace BAe Jetstream 31 and Swearingen Metroliner commuter propjets.
In 1995, United Express operated non-stop and one-stop services from Chicago O'Hare Airport, as well as non-stop flights from Burlington, IA, and Springfield, IL. Other regional airlines serving Quincy in the past included American Eagle in 1989. On November 6, 2006, Mesa Airlines announced new non-stop service to Chicago Midway International Airport and Kirksville Regional Airport, which began in February 2007 but was discontinued nine months later.
As of November 2022, Cape Air served Quincy via the federal Essential Air Service (EAS) program until they requested to be released from their contract due to pilot staffing issues. Southern Airways Express was chosen to replace Cape Air, operating nonstop flights to Chicago and St. Louis from Quincy.
