History of Hobby Airport
William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) in Houston, Texas, has a long history dating back to the early days of aviation. The airport has undergone several name changes and expansions over the years to become the busy transportation hub it is today.
The airport first opened in June 1927 as a private landing field in a 600-acre pasture known as W.T. Carter Field, named after its owner, W.T. Carter, Jr. In 1937, the City of Houston acquired the site and renamed it Houston Municipal Airport. The airport was briefly renamed Howard R. Hughes Airport in 1938 after Howard Hughes, who was responsible for several improvements, including the construction of its first control tower. However, the name was changed back to Houston Municipal Airport due to regulations prohibiting federal improvement funds from being used to name an airport after a living person.
During World War II, the airport received upgrades, including paved runways, hangars, and a runway lighting system. An international wing was added in 1949, and between 1954 and 1957, the City of Houston expanded the terminal and remodelled the runway system to accommodate new international destinations. With these developments, the airport was renamed Houston International Airport.
In 1967, two years before the opening of the Houston Intercontinental Airport (now George Bush Intercontinental Airport), the airport was renamed William P. Hobby Airport after the 27th Governor of Texas. However, with the opening of the new airport in 1969, Hobby Airport downsized its commercial operations, primarily serving private and corporate aircraft. Commercial flights resumed in 1971 as the new airport became congested.
