The history of Key West Airport
Key West International Airport is located about 180 miles southwest of Miami International Airport. The airport first opened in 1957 with one terminal. In February 2009, a new 30,000-square-foot terminal opened, doubling the size of the airport. The airport's relatively short runway limits the maximum size of aircraft that can serve it and restricts departing flight weights.
Key West's aviation history began in 1913 when Augustin Parla flew a bi-wing seaplane to Cuba without a compass. In 1928, Pan American Airways started scheduled flights from Key West. The main runway at Meacham Field was used by the US Army after the Pearl Harbor attack and by the US Navy during World War II as an alternative to the Trumbo Point seaplane base. After the war, the city took over what became Key West Municipal Airport. In 1953, the city gave Monroe County the title to Meacham Field, enabling the county to apply for Federal Aviation Administration grants. Around the same time, the airport became Key West International Airport.
In 1968, National began the first jet flights into Key West with nonstop service to Miami. By 1969, National was operating daily 727 jet service to Washington National Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport via intermediate stops. Several other airlines also introduced jet service to Key West in the following years. In 1979, Air Florida was operating five daily nonstop flights to Miami with Boeing 737 jetliners.
In 1987, Eastern Airlines operated daily mainline Boeing 727-100 jet service nonstop to Miami. By 1989, Piedmont Airlines was offering six daily nonstop flights to Miami with Fokker F28 Fellowship twin jets. Delta Connection carrier Comair began servicing Delta Air Lines' hub in Orlando in 1988 and briefly served Tampa and Fort Lauderdale. American Eagle Airlines started servicing Key West in 1989.
