The history of the airport
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is the primary international airport serving Detroit and its surrounding metropolitan area in Michigan. It is located in Romulus, a suburb of Detroit, and is Michigan's busiest airport. The airport covers 4,850 acres of land and is a major hub for Delta Air Lines, which has flights to Detroit from destinations in the United States and around the world.
In 1944, the U.S. Army announced its plans to release the airport, and in 1947, it was renamed the Detroit-Wayne Major Airport and expanded to four square miles. In 1956, the airport received long-range radar equipment, becoming the first inland airport in the United States certified for jet airliners. In 1958, the Leroy C. Smith (South) Terminal was completed, and the airport received its present name. American Airlines moved to Detroit-Wayne in October 1958, followed by Delta a few months later. The first scheduled jets from the airport were Delta DC-8s to Miami in late 1959.
In 1966, the North Terminal (Terminal 2) opened, and the final commercial air carriers moved from Willow Run Airport to Detroit Metropolitan Airport, bringing the number of scheduled passenger airlines at DTW to 13. In 1967, Terminal 1 was renamed the L.C. Smith Terminal, and in 1974, the Michael Berry International Terminal was built. In 1975, Terminal 2 was renamed the J.M. Davey Terminal, and in 1978, deregulation took control away from the government, allowing airlines to set their own fares and routes.
In 1986, Northwest Orient and Republic merged to form Northwest Airlines, creating a hub at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. In 1992, the FAA took control of a new Air Traffic Control Tower, the tallest in the Great Lakes Region. In 1996, plans were announced to build a new Midfield Terminal, and in 2001, Runway 4L/22R opened, giving DTW a configuration of four parallel and two crosswind runways. In 2002, the Midfield Terminal opened and was named after Wayne County Executive Edward H. McNamara.
In 2014, a study found that Detroit Metropolitan Airport generated $10.2 billion in annual economic impact and supported more than 86,000 jobs across Michigan. In 2017, the Airport Authority's administrative staff moved to the newly constructed Michael Berry Administration Building, and in 2019, the airport received awards for customer service and satisfaction from Airports Council International and J.D. Power, respectively.
