The history of DTW can be traced back to the 1930s when the Wayne County Airport was opened and began attracting airlines. By the 1940s, the airport had been enlarged and renamed the Detroit-Wayne Major Airport, becoming the city's primary airport. In 1946-47, most airline traffic moved from the cramped Detroit City Airport (now Coleman A. Young International Airport) to Willow Run Airport, which was closer to Wayne County Airport. In 1949, the airport added runways 3L/21R and 9L/27R, followed by runway 4R/22L in 1950. Aerial photographs from 1949 and 1956 show the airport's expansion during this time.
In 1958, the Civil Aviation Administration (now the Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA) announced that Detroit-Wayne would be one of the first American airports to receive new long-range radar equipment, enabling it to become the first inland airport in the US certified for jet airliners. That same year, airport management completed the Leroy C. Smith (South) Terminal, giving the airport its present name: Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW). American Airlines moved from Willow Run to Detroit-Wayne in October 1958, followed by Northwest, Allegheny, and Delta in subsequent months. The first scheduled jets from the airport were Delta DC-8s to Miami in late 1959.
In 1966, the North Terminal (later renamed the James M. Davey Terminal) opened, and the final commercial carriers moved from Willow Run Airport to DTW, bringing the number of scheduled passenger airlines at DTW to 13. In 1967, Terminal 1 was renamed the L.C. Smith Terminal after Leroy C. Smith, an airport founder. A third terminal, the Michael Berry International Terminal, opened in 1974. The last of its original three parallel runways (3R/21L) was completed in 1976, and a new parallel crosswind runway (9R/27L) opened in 1993.
In 1992, the FAA took control of its new $15 million Air Traffic Control Tower, the tallest in the Great Lakes Region at 250 feet. In 1996, Wayne County and Northwest Airlines announced plans to build a new Midfield Terminal, which opened in 2002 and was named after Wayne County Executive Edward H. McNamara. In 2008, the new North Terminal opened, and the Smith and Berry terminals were retired. In 2009, DTW launched its first social media efforts on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
