The airport was established in 1909 when the Aero Club of St. Louis created a balloon launching base called the "Permanent Aviation Field and Dirigible Harbor" in Kinloch Park. In October 1910, the airfield hosted the first International Air Meet, attracting famous guests like the Wright brothers and President Theodore Roosevelt, who took off in an airplane with pilot Arch Hoxsey, becoming the first U.S. President to do so. The airfield was also the site of what is considered the first parachute jump from an airplane in 1911.
In June 1920, the Missouri Aeronautical Society leased a nearby 170-acre field, naming it the "St. Louis Flying Field." The facility was renamed the "Lambert-St. Louis Flying Field" in 1923 after Albert Bond Lambert, an Olympic silver medalist golfer, president of Lambert Pharmaceutical Corporation, and the first person to receive a pilot's license in St. Louis. Lambert purchased the field in 1925 and added hangars and a passenger terminal. The airport became home to Naval Air Station St. Louis, a Naval Air Reserve facility, in 1925, and in 1930, it was officially christened the "Lambert–St. Louis Municipal Airport."
Today, St. Louis Lambert International Airport provides nonstop service to airports throughout the United States and to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe. In 2024, it served nearly 16 million passengers to over 80 nonstop domestic and international destinations. The airport has two terminals, five concourses, and 54 gates. While it has received criticism for its dated facilities and low ranking in customer satisfaction surveys, airport officials are working towards a $2.8 billion overhaul that includes consolidating the two terminals into one new dual-sided terminal, improving infrastructure, and enhancing shops and restaurants.

History of the airport
The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) is an international airport in Kenner, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is owned by the City of New Orleans and is 11 miles west of downtown New Orleans. The airport is named after Louis Armstrong, an American trumpeter and singer, to honour the 100th anniversary of his birth on 4 August 1901.
The airport's history dates back to 1946 when commercial service began at Moisant Field. The airport was shut down in September 1947 due to the impact of the 1947 Fort Lauderdale Hurricane, which submerged it under two feet of water. In 1959, a new terminal complex was inaugurated, which was expanded in the 1970s and 1990s. The airport was originally called the Moisant International Airport, but its name was changed to New Orleans International Airport in 1961.
In 1984, Northeastern International Airways operated a small hub at MSY, and in 1985, Pride Air, based in New Orleans, operated direct flights to sixteen destinations across the United States. In July 2001, the airport was renamed the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. In August 2005, the airport reopened to commercial flights after Hurricane Katrina, with Delta Air Lines operating four flights to Atlanta and Northwest Airlines flying to Memphis.
