The Rhodes International Airport is named Diagoras, after the ancient boxer Diagoras of Rhodes. Diagoras was a towering figure in the world of boxing during ancient times. Born in the 5th century BC to a noble family, his father, Damagetus, was a descendant of the kings of Ialyssos, while his mother was the daughter of Aristomenis, a Messenian hero. Diagoras' physical attributes were impressive, standing tall and stocky. He was fearless in the boxing ring and never tried to avoid his opponents' blows. He combined his great physical strength with his virtuous character, always following the rules of the contest and maintaining his kindness and honesty. His fighting style mesmerized crowds, making him a fan favourite.
Diagoras was a member of the Eratidea family at Ialysos in Rhodes. He descended from Damagetus, king of Ialysus, and, on his mother's side, from the Messenian hero and king Aristomenes. Diagoras was victorious in boxing twice in the Olympic Games, four times in the Isthmian Games, twice in the Nemean Games, and at least once in the Pythian Games. His victories, as well as those of his sons and grandsons, were celebrated in Pindar's Olympian Odes VII.
Diagoras' legacy is not only cemented by his personal victories but also by the successes of his descendants. His three sons were Olympic champions. The oldest son, Damagetos, won the pankration in 452 and 448 BC. The second son, Akousílaos, won the boxing championship in 448 BC. The youngest son, Dorieus, was even more successful, winning Olympic gold medals in two different events: boxing and pankration. Dorieus' achievement made him the only athlete in ancient history to win two separate Olympic events.
Diagoras' daughter Kallipáteira ("she of the beautiful father") was the only lay woman to enter the Olympic Games. All women, except the priestess of Demeter, were banned from watching because athletes performed in the nude. Kallipateira's son Peisírrhodos and her nephew Euklēs had both won in the Olympic Games, and she sneaked into the crowd disguised as a man to watch them compete.
Diagoras' name lives on not only in the Rhodes International Airport but also in various other ways. A sports arena in the heart of the city is named "Diagoras" Stadium, and a local football team called "Diagoras F.C." plays in the regional leagues of Greece. In 2018, articles in the Turkish press claimed that Diagoras' tomb had been discovered—a pyramid-shaped structure on a hill near Turgut village, southwest of Marmaris.
