New York Stewart International Airport, colloquially known as Stewart International Airport, is a public and military airport in Orange County, New York. It is located in the southern Hudson Valley, west of Newburgh, south of Kingston, and southwest of Poughkeepsie. The airport is approximately 60 miles (97 km) north of Manhattan, New York City, and is located within the towns of Newburgh and New Windsor.
The history of the airport began in the 1930s when Thomas "Archie" Stewart, an early aviation enthusiast, convinced his uncle, Samuel Stewart, to donate "Stoney Lonesome", a plot of land split between Newburgh and New Windsor, to the city of Newburgh for use as an airport. However, due to financial constraints caused by the Great Depression, the city was unable to develop the land. In 1934, Douglas MacArthur, the superintendent of the United States Military Academy, proposed using the land for flight training cadets. As a result, the city sold the land to the military academy for one dollar, and a small dirt airstrip was cleared and graded.
During World War II, many barracks and other buildings were constructed on the base, some of which still stand today. The airport was initially developed as a military base to allow cadets at the nearby United States Military Academy at West Point to learn aviation. Over time, it evolved into an Army airfield, a U.S. Air Force base, and an Air National Guard facility. Stewart Airport has played an important role in supporting the nearby U.S. Military Academy throughout its history.
