Málaga Airport is located 8 km (5.0 mi) southwest of Málaga and 5 km (3.1 mi) north of Torremolinos. It is the fourth busiest airport in Spain and the busiest international airport in Andalusia, with over 22.4 million passengers passing through in 2023.
Málaga Airport has had plans for a new runway since 2004, when the "Málaga Plan" was initiated. The airport has been expanding due to the increasing number of passengers, with a new terminal building designed by architect Bruce S. Fairbanks opening in 2010. This new terminal, adjacent to Terminal 2, doubled the capacity to 30 million passengers or 9,000 an hour.
The second runway, located on the other side of the terminals, officially opened on June 26, 2012, after nearly five years of work and an investment of 624 million euros. However, the second runway faced obstacles due to the height of structures close to its southern end, including a communications mast and buildings near the Guadalhorce river, a nature reserve.
To address these issues, legal proceedings were initiated to impose restrictions and reduce the height of the obstructing structures. As of 2019, only the northern end of the second runway was being used for takeoffs and landings due to these height concerns.
