History of the airport

The Isle of Man Airport has a long and fascinating history that dates back to the early days of aviation. Ronaldsway was first used as an airfield in 1928, and just five years later, in 1933, it began offering passenger services to the United Kingdom, operated by Blackpool and West Coast Air Services. In 1934, Aer Lingus and Railway Air Services (RAS) established further services, and in 1937, RAS operations from Ronaldsway to the UK were transferred to the Isle of Man Air Services.
During World War II, the airfield was used by the No. 1 GDGS (Ground Defence and Gunnery School), operating Westland Wallace aircraft. In 1943, the airfield was handed over to the Admiralty for development as a Fleet Air Arm training station, and it underwent extensive expansion and improvement, including the addition of runways and infrastructure to support training squadrons using Barracuda torpedo bombers.
Post-war, the airport reverted to civilian flying, and in 1948, the Isle of Man Government purchased it from the Admiralty. Several Manx-based airlines, including Mannin Airways Ltd and North-West Airlines (Isle of Man) Ltd, were formed to provide scheduled and charter services to the UK mainland.
In the late 1990s, a project was undertaken to extend the airport and improve passenger facilities, which was completed in 2000. This included the addition of a new landside catering outlet, arrivals area, baggage hall, and departure lounge.
