The airport's history
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (IATA: CAN, ICAO: ZGGG) is an international airport serving Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. The airport is located in the outskirts of Guangzhou's Baiyun District and Huadu District. The name "Baiyun" means "white cloud" in Chinese and refers to the nearby Baiyun Mountain.
The original Baiyun Airport opened in 1932 and began construction the same year. It officially opened in November 1933 and was one of the first civil airports in China. During the Canton Operation, the Japanese Navy invaded the airport and expanded the runway. In 1963, the People's Liberation Army Air Force moved away from the airport, making it only for public use. The airport underwent renovations and expansions in the 1980s to meet the standards of international first-class airports. Despite these efforts, the airport was still unable to meet the demands of the expanding city of Guangzhou.
In 2002, the passenger throughput of the old Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport had reached 16,014,400 passengers, and the cargo and mail throughput reached 592,600 tons. Due to the expansion of the city and the surrounding high-rise buildings, the airport could not expand any further to accommodate the increasing passenger traffic. As a result, plans were made to build a new airport to replace the old one.
The new Baiyun Airport opened on 5 August 2004, and the old airport was closed. The new airport is located 28 kilometres (17 miles) north of downtown Guangzhou and is nearly five times larger than its predecessor. It cost 19.8 billion yuan to build and does not have the same curfews and restrictions as the old airport, allowing it to operate 24 hours a day.
Over the years, the new Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport has continued to expand and develop. In 2005, FedEx Express signed a contract to relocate its Asia-Pacific hub to the airport, making it the largest FedEx hub outside the United States at the time. The airport has also added new runways and is currently undergoing a third phase expansion plan, which will include additional terminals, runways, and a high-speed railway station.
