The airport modernisation plan included extending the runway from 3,500 feet to 7,000 feet and broadening it from 23 metres to 45 metres to enable the landing of narrow-body jets. A new terminal building was inaugurated in February 2009, with the current passenger terminal opening in October 2021.
The domestic terminal building, built in 2008, covers an area of 4,200 m2 (45,000 sq ft) and has a centralised air conditioning and heating system, a Flight Information Display System (FIDS), and CCTV surveillance. The terminal has a peak-hour passenger handling capacity of 150 passengers and an annual handling capacity of 122,000. The new terminal building has a concourse, check-in areas, a security hold, an arrival lounge, and various offices. It is equipped with 48 check-in counters, four conveyor belts, 12 baggage X-ray machines, self-check-in kiosks, and retail and commercial spaces.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has modernised the airport in two phases. The first phase included the construction of a new passenger terminal building, a utility block, a parking space, a sewage treatment plant, rainwater harvesting facilities, and other ancillary structures.
