Mankato Regional Airport's history
Mankato Regional Airport has a long history dating back to the 1920s when aviation enthusiasts in southern Minnesota transformed cropland into runways. The first landing strip was located in a flat field north of Mankato near Highway 5. In 1928, a new airport building was constructed, which was a little closer to the town. The airport had few planes, but in the early 1930s, it gained an ambulance plane, a biplane, and the Curtiss Jr. These planes were originally meant for flying mail and military supplies.
In the 1930s, local aviation enthusiast Robert "Bob" Rasmussen purchased a 107-acre plot of land between Monks Avenue and Pohl Road, about two miles southeast of Mankato. He leased the land to Lawrence Sohler, a 22-year-old from Eagle Lake who had learned to fly only three years earlier. Sohler became the airport's first field manager and supervised the construction of a single grass runway and a metal hangar before leaving Mankato in 1934 to train military pilots before and during World War II.
In 1940, the first passenger plane flew into Mankato Regional Airport, marking a significant decade for the airport. During this time, Harold Schlesselman bought the airport from Robert Rasmussen, and new weather equipment was installed. Unfortunately, a fire started by a welding torch burned down the offices, houses, and repair shops. Despite this setback, the first flying club at the airport was established, and the airport continued to grow.
Since 1970, the airport has expanded into a 1,000-acre site, adding an instrument landing system, a new runway lighting system, and fuel storage tanks. More flights were added, offering trips to destinations like Chicago, and private jets started flying businesspeople into the city from around the world. In 1991, a partnership between MSU-Mankato and North Star Aviation, Inc. was formed, with the latter training the university's aviation students at the airport. Today, Mankato Regional Airport is the second busiest airport in the state of Minnesota, providing more than 160 jobs and an annual economic impact of about $11.5 million.
