Tenerife is the largest of Spain's Canary Islands, and is served by two airports: Tenerife North Airport (TFN) and Tenerife South Airport (TFS). Tenerife North Airport, formerly known as Los Rodeos Airport, is located in the north of the island, in the district of La Laguna, about seven miles from the island's capital, Santa Cruz. Tenerife North Airport
The history of Tenerife North Airport dates back to the 1930s when the field at Los Rodeos was first used for aviation. In 1935, funds were gathered to build a small hangar and expand the airstrip, which became known as Los Rodeos Airport. In 1941, operations into Los Rodeos recommenced with a De Havilland DH89A Dragon Rapide operating an Iberia flight from Gran Canaria. Over the years, the airport underwent expansions and improvements, including the opening of a new terminal in 2002, which reopened the airport to international traffic.
Due to its location in the north of Tenerife, the airport often experiences misty and foggy weather conditions, particularly during the winter months. These adverse weather conditions have impacted flight operations in the past, with low visibility contributing to the deadliest aviation accident in history in 1977, known as the Tenerife airport disaster. As a result of this incident, a new airport, Tenerife South Airport, was built to address the safety concerns at Tenerife North Airport.

Transport to the airport
Tenerife has two airports: Tenerife North Airport (TFN) and Tenerife South Airport (TFS). The latter is also known as Tenerife South–Reina Sofía Airport, and is the larger and more modern of the two. It is also the second busiest airport in the Canary Islands. Tenerife North Airport, on the other hand, is relatively small and easy to navigate, with just one terminal.
There are several transport options available for travelling to and from Tenerife's airports. The island doesn't offer much in the way of public transport, so driving or taking a taxi is the simplest option. There are also bus and shuttle services available, as well as private transfer companies.
If you're travelling to Tenerife North Airport, the local bus company, Titsa, operates a service from Santa Cruz (Line 20) for just a few euros each way. Buses on the island are known as "guaguas".
For Tenerife South Airport, Titsa also operates a bus service (Line 111) from Santa Cruz. There is also a night bus (Route 711) that covers the same destinations.
Several private transfer companies offer services to and from both airports, including Shuttle Direct and Tenerife Airport Transfers. These companies provide taxi and minibus transfers, and can often accommodate special requests, such as golf bags, if given advance notice. They offer reliable and courteous service, with clean and modern vehicles, and can be booked in advance so that a driver is waiting for you when your plane arrives.

History of Tenerife airports
Tenerife is the biggest of Spain's Canary Islands. Two airports serve the island: Tenerife North Airport (TFN) and Tenerife South Airport (TFS). The former is also known as Tenerife Los Rodeos, Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport, or simply Los Rodeos, and the latter is also called Reina Sofía Airport, Tenerife Sur Airport, or Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur.
Before the 1970s, Tenerife only had one airport—Los Rodeos Airport, now known as Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport. In the late 1960s, island authorities decided that a second airport was needed because Los Rodeos did not meet technical requirements due to adverse weather conditions, especially low visibility in foggy conditions. This issue was exemplified by the events of 27 March 1977, when two Boeing 747s collided on the runway at Los Rodeos, killing 583 people in part due to very low visibility.
In July 1973, the Air Ministry awarded the project for the construction of the airfield, with a budget of almost 450 million pesetas. On 23 October 1978, Tenerife Sur Airport was opened to domestic civil air traffic, and then to international flights from 2 November. The official inauguration took place on 6 November 1978, with Queen Sofía of Spain in attendance.
