General Logan was a lawyer, judge, military officer, and politician, who dedicated his life to serving his country and community.
General Edward Lawrence Logan was born on January 20, 1875, in South Boston, to a military family with roots in Galway, Ireland. He attended Boston Latin School and Harvard University, graduating in 1897. During his senior year at Harvard, in 1898, he enlisted in the 9th Infantry of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, also known as the 9th Irish Regiment, following in the footsteps of his father, Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence Logan. The regiment saw heavy combat in the Spanish-American War, and Edward remained stateside, taking charge of reenlistment. After the war, he returned to Harvard Law School and graduated in 1901.
Edward Logan had a successful legal career, building a law practice in Boston while also continuing his military service. He rose through the ranks, becoming a Major in 1911 and a Colonel in 1912, commanding the 9th Infantry Regiment. During World War I, he led the 101st Infantry Regiment of the 26th Yankee Division to France, where they fought with distinction. After the war, he played a crucial role in the reorganization of the unit into the Massachusetts National Guard, achieving the rank of Major General in 1923.
General Logan was also active in politics, serving as a state representative and senator from South Boston. He was elected to the Massachusetts State Senate in 1905 and held various judicial positions, including associate justice of the Municipal Court for the South Boston District. Additionally, he advocated strongly for veteran benefits, including the inclusion of pilots in the category of military veterans.
