Daniel K. Inouye International Airport
The airport is proudly named after Hawaii’s late Senator Inouye, who was the second-longest-serving member of the U.S. Senate before his death, with a tenure of more than 49 years. Hilo International Airport
The airport was previously known as General Lyman Field, and the main terminal still bears the Lyman name. The airport's name was changed to Hilo International Airport in May 1989 to reorient its image and to conform to the practice of naming airports for their geographical locations.
The airport has a long history, with work beginning on an interim overseas terminal at General Lyman Field in November 1968. The facility, designed for the growing number of overseas passengers, was dedicated on July 4, 1969. In 1970, the Governor of Hawaii, John Burns, appointed the Hilo Airport Advisory Committee to make recommendations on the long-term development of the airport. As a result, the terminals were relocated, and a new terminal was designed to accommodate the largest passenger airliner in service at the time, the Boeing 747.
The first phase of the new terminal was completed in 1975, and the second phase was dedicated on April 30, 1976. To accommodate the longer runway, a new, taller air traffic control tower was opened in November 1979. Several airlines provided nonstop and direct service to Hilo from the west coast and other locations in the US, including Braniff International Airways, United Airlines, Pan American World Airways, Continental Airlines, Northwest Airlines, and Western Airlines.
However, by the mid-1980s, overseas traffic had declined significantly, and United Airlines, the sole remaining overseas carrier, terminated its scheduled service in December 1986. Hilo was left without nonstop service to North America for nearly two decades until ATA Airlines re-established daily non-stop service to Oakland International Airport in California in 2006. Unfortunately, ATA Airlines ceased operations in 2008 due to increasing fuel prices and the cancellation of a charter flight agreement.

Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport
The airport is named after astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who was born and raised in Kona and died in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. In 1991, a small museum called the Astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center opened at the airport, featuring exhibits such as a sample of lunar soil, a spacesuit from Apollo 13, and personal items belonging to Onizuka.
