Edmonton International Airport (IATA: YEG, ICAO: CYEG) is the primary air passenger and air cargo facility in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region of the Canadian province of Alberta. The airport is located 30 km (19 mi) south of Downtown Edmonton in Leduc County on Highway 2, opposite the city of Leduc.
In 1950, the Edmonton City Centre Airport was a stop on an international route operated by Northwest Airlines between the United States and Asia. In 1955, land near Leduc was chosen as the future site of the Edmonton International Airport, and Transport Canada purchased 7,600 acres of land for $1,469,657. The airport opened on November 15, 1960, with its first terminal an arch hangar. In 1963, a 370,000-square-foot steel and glass terminal opened a year ahead of schedule, costing $10 million. This terminal is now YEG's north terminal.
During the 1970s, the airport experienced rapid growth in traffic as the city of Edmonton grew, serving approximately 2 million passengers by 1980. During this time, YEG handled wide-body jets that carried up to 400 passengers non-stop to Europe. However, from the early 1980s to 1995, traffic declined due to the continued usage of the Edmonton City Centre Airport and a slowing economy.
In 1995, 77% of voters approved the consolidation of all scheduled jet passenger service at Edmonton International Airport. This decision put new pressures on YEG, as the main terminal was designed to accommodate 2.5 million passengers per year, but by 1999, 3.8 million passengers were using the airport annually. In 1998, the airport began a $282 million redevelopment project, which included the construction of the south terminal and central hall, a commuter facility, doubling of the apron, and a multistorey parkade. This redevelopment expanded the passenger capacity to 5.5 million. In 2018, YEG served 8.2 million passengers annually, making it Canada's largest airport in area.
