Rome has two airports: Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and Ciampino–G. B. Pastine International Airport (CIA). Fiumicino Airport is the larger of the two, located about 40 kilometres (25 miles) outside of Rome's historic centre, in the town of Fiumicino. It is Italy's main airport and is ranked 8th in the World's Top 10 Airports for 2025. The airport is also known as Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport, Aeroporto Leonardo da Vinci, or simply Fiumicino Airport. Ciampino Airport, on the other hand, is much smaller and located only about 12.5 kilometres (7.5 miles) outside of Rome's city centre. It is commonly used by smaller budget airlines and is a cheaper option for travellers due to its proximity to the city.

Fiumicino Airport
Rome's main airport is called Fiumicino Airport, officially known as Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, or simply Rome-Fiumicino Airport (FCO). Leonardo da Vinci Airport
The airport has undergone several improvements over the years. In 2005, it implemented a category III B instrument landing system (ILS). In 2007, further improvements enabled the airport to handle 30 takeoffs and landings per hour, up from 10, during thick fog. In 2010, a new single baggage handling system was introduced for more efficient luggage delivery. History
The airport was originally a Naval Auxiliary Air Station, with three asphalt runways built by the Navy. In 1945, the airport was deeded back to the county when the Navy discontinued its use of the site. It was then named after Richard B. Russell, Jr., who represented Georgia in the U.S. Senate from 1933 until his death in 1971.

The airport currently has two asphalt-paved runways: 1/19, which measures 6,006 by 150 feet, and 7/25, which measures 4,497 by 100 feet. There was formerly a third runway, designated 14/32, but it is now closed.
Aircraft Operations and Incidents
For the 12-month period ending December 31, 2022, the airport recorded 61,000 aircraft operations, with an average of 167 per day. 98% of these were general aviation, while 2% were military. At the time, there were 69 aircraft based at the airport: 54 single-engine, 12 multi-engine, 1 ultralight, and 2 jet.
The airport has been the site of several crashes. On February 15, 1973, a Cessna 210 Centurion en route to Columbus Metropolitan Airport crashed 11 miles south of Rome shortly after departing from Richard B. Russell Airport. All four occupants, including the then-mayor of Columbus, Georgia, J.R. Allen, were killed. On December 11, 1991, a Hawker 400 operated by Bruno's Inc. crashed 7.5 miles WSW of the airport into Lavender Mountain, resulting in the deaths of all nine occupants.

Rome's airport transport options

Train
