The airfield was bought by the City of Hagerstown in 1934 for $18,000, and leased back to Fairchild, with air traffic services commencing in 1935. During World War II, Fairchild produced over 150 training aircraft per month. In the late 1960s, Henson Aviation, which had taken over the airport lease in 1939, pioneered aviation commuter services with Allegheny Commuter, using a 9-passenger Beech Queen-Air. This service proved highly successful and was soon replaced with a larger 15-passenger Beech King-Air in 1969. In 1977, Henson began operating a short 330, carrying 30 passengers.
