Tragically, during the dedication ceremony, 1st Lt Nott died in an air performance, and Senator Simmons requested that his name be added to the airport's name.
World War II brought significant changes to the airport. In August 1941, the Marine Corps leased the field and named it Camp Mitchell Airfield. The airport was used for anti-submarine patrols by the Army Air Forces in early 1942. The field underwent improvements during a seven-month closure in 1942, including the installation of two hard surface runways and a runway lighting system.
In 1962, the commercial terminal was rebuilt to better serve the local community, and a control tower was added in 1974. The airport gained a Fixed Base Operator (FBO) in 1975, and the Airport Authority was established by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1979. Craven County assumed ownership in 1985, and the airport was renamed Craven County Regional Airport in 1990.
A new terminal was completed in 1999, and in 2008, the airport's name was changed to Coastal Carolina Regional Airport to reflect its regional significance. The airport has continued to invest in infrastructure, approving a 20-year master plan in 2006 that included runway expansions and a new control tower. Today, the airport is in the top 10 of North Carolina's airports, providing commercial jet air service, general aviation services, and support to military aircraft.
