John Glenn Columbus International Airport (IATA: CMH, ICAO: KCMH, FAA LID: CMH) is located 6 miles (9.7 km) east of downtown Columbus, Ohio. The airport was formerly known as Port Columbus International Airport and its code "CMH" stands for "Columbus Municipal Hangar", its original name.
The airport was inaugurated in the summer of 1929 as the eastern terminus of Transcontinental Air Transport (TAT), one of America's first commercial airlines and the first to offer coast-to-coast service. Charles Lindbergh personally selected the airport for TAT, which began services to several US states, including Oklahoma. By 1940, the airport was handling around 15 flights per day, and passenger numbers continued to grow.
During World War II, the US Navy took over most of the facility, establishing Naval Air Station Columbus in 1942. The government also set up a factory on the airport grounds, known as Air Force Factory 85, which produced aircraft such as the F-100 Super Sabre and the T-28 Trojan. After the war, in 1946, the facility was returned to civilian authorities.
Port Columbus Airport continued to expand and modernize over the following decades. In 1979, the airport celebrated its 50th birthday with a $70 million renovation of the terminal and facilities. Further developments included the construction of a new concourse, retail areas, and a food court. In 1999, a massive parking garage was built, and in 2004, a new modern control tower was opened.
On May 25, 2016, the Ohio General Assembly passed a bill to rename the airport from Port Columbus International Airport to John Glenn Columbus International Airport, in honour of astronaut and four-term US senator John Glenn. The name change was unanimously approved by the airport's board.

This increased the distance between the runways, allowing for simultaneous takeoffs and landings, and thus increasing air traffic volume. Of these movements, 65% were commercial, 19% were general aviation, 16% were air taxi, and less than 1% were military.
