The hamster, named Pebbles, was a dwarf hamster and was considered an emotional support animal for the passenger, Belen Aldecosea, a 21-year-old college student. Aldecosea had called Spirit Airlines twice before her November 21 flight to inquire about bringing her emotional support hamster onto the plane, and she claims that both representatives said it would be permissible. However, upon arriving at the airport, Spirit employees refused to let her bring the hamster onto the plane. Aldecosea alleges that an employee then recommended that she either set it free outside or flush it down the toilet.
Spirit Airlines acknowledged that they had misinformed Aldecosea about being able to bring her hamster on the flight but strongly denied that their employees had suggested killing the animal. "After researching this incident, we can say confidently that at no point did any of our agents suggest this Guest (or any other for that matter) should flush or otherwise injure an animal," said airline spokesman Derek Dombrowski. "It is incredibly disheartening to hear this Guest reportedly decided to end her own pet's life," he added.
Aldecosea told the Miami Herald that the ordeal was horrifying and that she was emotional and crying during the incident. She said she sat in the stall for about 10 minutes, crying, before making the decision to flush Pebbles. Aldecosea considered other options, such as renting a car, but was too young to do so on her own, and there was a lack of other travel options due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
