Before the construction of Haneda, the area was a prosperous resort centred around Anamori Inari Shrine. Tokyo's primary airport was Tachikawa Airfield, which was a 35-kilometre (22-mile) drive from central Tokyo. In 1930, the Japanese postal ministry purchased a 53-hectare (130-acre) portion of reclaimed land from a private individual to construct an airport. Haneda Airfield first opened in 1931 with a 300-metre (980-foot) concrete runway, a small airport terminal, and two hangars. During World War II, Haneda Airport was used for military transport services and flight training for the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service.

Haneda previously carried the IATA airport code TYO, and was the primary international airport serving Tokyo until 1978. From 1978 to 2010, it handled almost all domestic flights to and from Tokyo, as well as some scheduled charter flights to major cities in East and Southeast Asia. In 2010, a dedicated international terminal (Terminal 3) was opened, allowing long-haul flights to operate during the night.
