The airport was located 1,300 feet or 396 meters above sea level, making it the highest airport in Mindanao and the second-highest in the Philippines, after Loakan Airport in Baguio. The airport derived its name from its location in Barangay Maria Cristina in the neighbouring municipality of Balo-i. Another possible namesake is Maria Cristina Falls, one of Iligan's most famous attractions.
Iligan Maria Cristina Airport was replaced by the Laguindingan Airport in Misamis Oriental, which also serves the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan corridor. The new airport opened on June 15, 2013, and is located 57 kilometres from Iligan. The Short 360-300 aircraft had departed from Mactan–Cebu International Airport at 6:42 a.m. local time and the last radio contact was made at 7:17 a.m. when the aircraft was on approach to land at Iligan. The aircraft was confirmed to be damaged beyond repair, and all 11 passengers and 4 crew members on board were pronounced dead. The crash was the first fatal accident involving a Short 360 aircraft.
After the aircraft failed to arrive in Iligan, a communications search was conducted across all airports in Mindanao, but all airports reported that they had not been in contact with Flight 443. Philippine Airlines and the Philippine Air Force immediately assisted in the search, but their efforts were delayed due to bad weather. On 19 December, five days after the crash, the wreckage was found, and ground troops reported that some victims had missing limbs, while others were badly burned. There were also reports that the crash site had been looted.
