Sir Donald Sangster was born on 26 October 1911 in Mountainside, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. He was educated at Munro College and was admitted to practise as a solicitor in Jamaica in 1937. He began his political career in 1933 when he was elected to the Parochial Board of St. Elizabeth at the age of 21. In 1944, he was elected to the House of Representatives of Jamaica as a member of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). Over the years, he served as Minister of Social Welfare and Labour, Deputy Party Leader, and Minister of Finance before becoming Deputy Prime Minister in 1963.
Sangster became Acting Prime Minister in February 1964 when Prime Minister Sir Alexander Bustamante fell ill. He retained the post of Minister of Finance during this time. In 1965, he was appointed to act as Prime Minister once again, as well as Minister of External Affairs and Minister of Defence, when Sir Alexander Bustamante's illness persisted. After the JLP's victory in the 1967 General Elections and Sir Alexander Bustamante's resignation, Sangster was officially appointed Prime Minister on 22 February 1967, retaining his posts as Minister of Finance and Minister of Defence.
Sir Donald Sangster represented Jamaica at various Commonwealth conferences and was Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in 1964. He was also a member of the Joint Committee of Parliament, which framed the Constitution for Independent Jamaica. Sangster's cultural nationalism, defence of sovereignty for colonized peoples, and concern for racial democracy are notable aspects of his political career. He passed away on 11 April 1967, just over a month after taking office as Prime Minister.
