The growth of the Las Vegas casino industry during the 1950s fuelled a rise in air traffic, with the city going from receiving 36,000 passengers in 1948 to nearly one million in 1959. In the 1950s, as the Strip expanded, passenger counts increased, leading to the construction of a new terminal. This terminal opened in March 1963. Another expansion project, which included adding Concourses A and B and lengthening the runways, ended in 1974. However, the project was insufficient to accommodate the high traffic levels.
In October 1985, a central terminal, Concourse C, and a people mover between the two buildings were opened. In 1991, the Charter/International Terminal, later renamed Terminal 2, was opened. In 2005, work began on Terminal 3, which was inaugurated in June 2012, replacing Terminal 2. Terminal 3 cost $2.4 billion and was the largest public works project in Nevada. In 2017, seven gates in Concourse D were equipped to receive international flights, and a tunnel was built to connect them to the customs facility in Terminal 3.
