Tweed New Haven Airport (IATA: HVN, ICAO: KHVN, FAA LID: HVN) is a public airport located in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States. The airport is partly located in the City of New Haven, which owns it, and partly in the Town of East Haven. It is one of two airports in Connecticut with regularly scheduled commercial services, the other being Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks.
The airport was originally known as New Haven Municipal Airport, with ground-breaking ceremonies taking place on November 11, 1929. It was then dedicated and opened for traffic on August 29, 1931. The first airline to serve the airport was Li-Con Airways, Inc. (Long Island-Connecticut Airways) of Islip, Long Island, New York. The carrier commenced service on November 10, 1933, and provided passenger and airmail service until July 1934.
On June 25, 1961, the airport was renamed in honour of John H. "Jack" Tweed, its first airport manager. From then on, it became known as Tweed New Haven Airport. In the mid-1980s, NewAir, the hometown airline of New Haven, merged with Pilgrim Airlines, and the new entity was purchased by Hartford-based Business Express Airlines. In 1985, Business Express established a code-sharing relationship with Delta Air Lines and became a Delta Connection feeder airline.
In 2002, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the State of Connecticut approved an airport layout plan that included the installation of safety overruns and the extension of the main runway. However, in 2007, officials in East Haven rejected the upgrade proposal and denied permits for work on the East Haven (north) side, leading to legal disputes.
