Austin Bergstrom International Airport history
The history of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA/AUS) can be traced back to the mid-20th century. In 1928, voters approved the construction of the city's first airport, and in the late 1920s, the Austin City Council requested that the Army Corps identify a suitable site. The council's chosen site became Robert Mueller Municipal Airport, named after a city council member who had recently passed away. The airport was officially dedicated in October 1930 and welcomed its first commercial flight in 1936.
In 1942, the US government purchased a different piece of land for the construction of a military facility, Del Valle Army Air Base. In March 1943, it was renamed the Bergstrom Army Airfield after Captain John August Earl Bergstrom, a reservist in the 19th Bombardment Group who was killed in the Philippines in 1941. He was the first Austinite killed in World War II. When the Air Force became its own military branch in 1947 or 1948, the base was renamed Bergstrom Air Force Base.
By the 1970s, Austin was outgrowing Robert Mueller Municipal Airport, and the city began considering options for a new airport. In 1990, Congress ordered the closure of Bergstrom Air Force Base, and when it was decommissioned in the early 1990s, the land was returned to the City of Austin. Robert Mueller Municipal Airport was closed in May 1999, and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport opened to the public on May 23, 1999, with one of the longest commercial runways in the country. The airport's main terminal is named after Barbara Jordan, and a statue of her was unveiled in the terminal in 2002.
Since its opening, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has undergone several expansions, including the addition of new gates and a second terminal. The airport is currently undergoing a major expansion program, "Journey With AUS", to accommodate the rapid growth in travel demand. Airport expansion plans
