Airport history

The Augusta State Airport (AUG) is located just 2km west of the central business district of Augusta, Maine, in the United States. The airport is owned by the state of Maine and is managed and operated by the city of Augusta.

The airport was originally developed in 1934 under a New Deal project by the Maine Emergency Relief Administration, a division of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration. It was built with three gravel runways: a north-south runway measuring 2,000x80 feet, an east-west runway measuring 1,600x80 feet, and a northeast-southwest runway measuring 2,500x80 feet.

Over the years, the airport has undergone several improvements. In 2012, runway 17/35 was reconstructed at a cost of $7.5 million, funded by the federal government. The project involved grinding up the original surface and reclaiming it, as well as upgrading runway lights and navigational aids. The airport also received a $1 million federal grant to purchase new snow removal equipment, allowing it to remain operational during snowstorms.

The airport covers an area of 406 acres at an elevation of 352 feet above mean sea level. It has two asphalt-paved runways: runway 17/35, which is 5,001 feet by 150 feet, and runway 8/26, which is 2,703 feet by 75 feet.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the airport had 3,554 passenger boardings in 2008, 3,663 in 2009, and 4,300 in 2010. It is categorised as a non-primary commercial service facility in the FAA National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017-2021.
