Torslanda Airport was Gothenburg's primary airport from 1923-1977
Gothenburg, Sweden, has three airports: Göteborg Landvetter Airport, Gothenburg City Airport, and Torslanda Airport. Torslanda Airport was Gothenburg's primary airport from 1923 to 1977, when Göteborg Landvetter Airport was opened.
Torslanda Airport was located in the nearby town of Torslanda. In 1969, an air traffic control tower was built on an adjacent hilltop to replace an older tower built in 1938. The same year, a new terminal building was constructed next to the old one from 1938. There were three runways, which were reduced to two after 1966 when they were extended.
The airport closed soon after Göteborg Landvetter Airport was opened in 1977. Much of Torslanda Airport was demolished in 1997, but the control tower, located on a hilltop adjacent to the site of the airport, was renovated in 2007 and remains one of the last artefacts of the airport.
